Most people don’t realize that wine was born in Israel – and the eastern Mediterranean region of which Israel is a part. Some have called Israel “The Original Wine World”! When the Romans controlled this area two thousand years ago they loved Israeli wine and exported it throughout Europe. Following a dormant winemaking period of nearly 1,500 years the Israeli wine scene has burst back into the wine world – today there are nearly 300 Israeli wineries, most small and family-owned. Like Chile, Italy and California, Israel is long and narrow providing for many micro-climates throughout the tiny nation. The two premiere (and ancient!) wine grape-growing regions are in the elevated area in the north, The Galilee, and in the lush mountainous area surrounding Jerusalem, the Judean Hills.
